Mission: Jumping Right In
Location: Antarctica - SGC
Timeline: MD1 - 1300 hours
853 words - 1.7 OF Standard Post Measure

Antarctica, what a freaking wasteland. Ok ok, it is not a wasteland, it is obviously very important to the climate and keeping the planet from going all microwave on everyone. But seriously, it's a wasteland. Basically a desert but with snow, where you freeze your shins out!

Those are were the thoughts that went through Jen's head as the C-130 began its descent in order to land. She had been looking over at pictures of the damn place on a laptop before she had shipped out. It did not look pretty at all, and the stories she had read about the so many expeditions dying out in the frozen wastes in the past seriously did not boost her confidence.

But her smile did not fade. Well it was actually a smirk as she stood strapped in her seat, waiting for their plane to land. Truthfully, it had not been death by freezing that scared her, or living in a frozen wasteland. What scared her was the simple idea of dying before she could do anything, before she could help, before she could have some certainty or hope that her family would be safe from whatever is out there.

As the plane landed she held on, thinking back to how she even came to be aboard this plane. Jennifer had been with the MarSOC marines for sixteen years now. She had seen combat more times than she preferred to remember. But that was not what she thought had qualified her.

Oh no, what qualified her must have been that asshole colonel, Duran. Well, not really an asshole, he was actually a really stand up guy and leader. Its just... he always had such high expectations of her, maybe that is why she loved to mess with him so much. Always skittering on the edge of breaking some meaningless rule, but never quite doing it. Her way of trying to fight back against the stress placed on her.

She recalled back to when the aliens started shooting down from orbit. Jennifer had been still young then, only three years after enlisting and in a many ways still learning about her place in the world. She felt so helpless watching the news feeds from the base's tv.

In a sense, she had been lucky, being State side then. Her unit had been deployed to help with search and rescue operations. Actually before that she had been really lucky her base did not get obliterated from orbit first of all. Seriously damn lucky, even if it felt... disempowering, not being able to do anything to stop the destruction. She had never left so weak in her life, seeing the chaos and damage done by the aliens. But ever since she had served in her duties to the very best of her abilities and more, after all it was all she could do.

Maybe that was why colonel Duran had recommended her? All she got really was more questions and confusion from him. He had always liked to keep his cards close to his chest. Barely giving her enough information to catch her interest and desire to join. And she did, without thinking twice. Taking the fight to the enemy one day, and she could help do that.

Alright, eventually she did get the full story, and top secret clearance. Who in God's name thought giving her clearance was a good idea?! Seriously now!! But yes after she had read and learned what truly transpired, Jennifer understood why Duran had approached her the way she did. Their conversation had been strange, true, but he did not give her too much information to have her go gun blazingly eager. He told her just enough to let her have second thoughts and doubts. Which in the end proved it had been the best way he could approach her.

It meant she chose to come here after thinking things trough properly. And after reading the documents sent to her, she was glad things had gone the way they had. She had been calm, Duran's approach had helped her take this step in a much more cerebral way. Which was good, out in the field, emotions could more often than not mean your death after all.

The plane came to a stop and the ramp began to open. 'Fuck it is freezing, thank the gods for cold weather gear, right? Hopefully the underground bunker will be warmer at the very least. Please please please let no one get the bright idea of putting her on guard duty outside, or else she would go Han Solo on the nearest bipedal heat source, cutting a hole and crawling inside to keep warm.' Jen mused to herself, as she watched the others unload before.

'Alright, too many dark thoughts, do not go Harley Quinn just yet.' Taking her bag, she followed the other soldiers and headed towards the transport that was supposed to take them to the bunker. Obviously in a organized and calm fashion despite the terrifying cold outside. She could not wait to get inside and see what would await her.
